Dog handlers are officers who work with specially trained dogs.
They assist patrol officers in their daily work or respond to calls that may present a risk to the officers. They also support investigators in solving various crimes and take part in police operations conducted by the department's units.
Dog handlers are each responsible for training their own animal. For the first 16 to 20 weeks, the police officer trains the dog daily, before taking part in any operations. These officers also take care of the animal's needs.
In general, the police officer remains in the position for as long as the dog is able to carry out its duties.
The SPVM has 11 dog handlers.
