Montréal’s 4,000 police officers collectively look after close to 150 policing functions. Throughout their careers, SPVM police officers get the chance to try out several police duties, depending on their skills and personal or professional interests.
Montréal is a large metropolis which has a wide range of social and criminal phenomena, like any major urban centre. This means more requirements in terms of intervention, prevention and maintenance of public security, which in turn implies far more need for police expertise of every kind.
If the SPVM is able to meet these needs it is because of the work of its police officers, who work in three specific areas: patrolling/policing, investigation, operational support and prevention. To achieve this, they are supported by almost 1,400 civilian employees
