Technical response officers are trained to intervene in special police operations. They are called upon to go to event locations requiring their expertise, for example, as sniper, explosives technician or police diver.

They are required to have and remain up to date on highly specialized work methods and techniques.

Their expertise may be needed at various events such as when a person is barricaded, hostages are taken, a person is suicidal or dangerous to others, missing person cases requiring divers, and many others.
