Since August 28, 2023, recruits hired by the SPVM will follow the new eight-week Police Integration Program (Programme d’intégration à la fonction policière), which now includes the “Immersion MTL” component.
Moreover, the SPVM is very grateful towards its many stakeholders who host recruits during this component so they can discover their realities and potentially gain a better understanding of this when responding to calls.
By working together on “Immersion MTL”, we help raise awareness of future police officers who will interact with clients and stakeholders from organizations, institutions or communities, as part of their work.
Training
During the first three weeks of the Program, recruits will become familiar with the special features of policing at the SPVM. They are also trained on different types of police interventions adapted to Montréal realities during experiential learning with actors.
Immersion MTL
During the following five weeks, stakeholders will host these recruits, without a uniform or a weapon, so they can experience their reality with them, within their organization or institution, in their community, with absolute humility and respect, as equals.
The immersive experiences offered to recruits differ depending on the mission and capabilities of the organizations and institutions hosting them. All of these experiences are also aimed at preparing recruits so that they can better interact and better consider sensitive interventions with Montréal diverse populations.
“Immersion MTL” aims to bring together future police officers from different communities to strengthen the bond of trust with the public.
Examples of immersive experiences
Integration
As part of the Recruit Intake and Integration Program [Programme d’accueil et d’intégration de la recrue (PAIR)], officers then accompany recruits on joining a neighbourhood police station, with the support of their team members. Known as “PAIR officers”, these experienced police officers help recruits to effectively integrate into their group, their working environment and their tasks.
New members are eventually better equipped to have a successful career at the SPVM.
We very warmly thank the many stakeholders who have joined forces with us to prepare the police force of tomorrow, today.
If you wish to take part as a stakeholder in “Immersion MTL”, write to us at: immersionmtl@spvm.qc.ca
A member of our team will contact you to discuss the opportunities and arrangements. They will support you throughout the partnership. For example, they will carry out follow-up checks during and after recruits’ visits to see if any adjustments are needed.
FAQs
1. Who can host SPVM recruits?
Organizations, institutions, communities with which the SPVM works and families.
2. Why should I take part in this Immersion MTL component?
By working together on “Immersion MTL”, you contribute to raising awareness of future police officers who will interact with clients and stakeholders from your organization as part of their work. It’s an opportunity to introduce your services to these recruits, share your everyday realities and challenges while creating a bond of trust with them.
3. If I accept to take part, do I need to commit on a long-term basis?
No. A stakeholder who accepts to host recruits does so on a voluntary basis, and based on its organizational capacities.
4. How can we participate as an organization, institution, community or family?
If you are interested, simply write to us at: immersionmtl@spvm.qc.ca
A member of our “Immersion MTL” team will contact you to discuss the opportunities and arrangements. They will liaise with you from the start of the partnership. They will also carry out follow-up checks during and after recruits’ visits to make sure that the experience went smoothly and to see if any adjustments are needed for a future visit. As the SPVM hosts recruits every month, this person can inform you about the dates for a future partnership, based on your organizational capacities at all times.
5. What measures is the SPVM taking to ensure confidentiality during the presence of recruits with our beneficiaries in our facilities?
Recruits are hired as police officers and are required to take an “Oath of discretion” under the Police Act. In view of the rules laid down for this purpose by the By-law respecting the internal discipline of police officers of Ville de Montréal and the Code of ethics of police officers, recruits may not disclose or share any information they become aware of as part of their work, without being duly authorized.
