For the second year in a row, thirty 12-to-15-year-old youth spent 12 weeks at Pro Martial, practising different types of martial arts alongside officers from PDQ 30. The activities are part of Project CONTACT, a plan to help youth in the St-Michel district to overcome bullying and develop self-confidence. The participants were selected by the community relations officers who work with the neighbourhood schools.
First launched in 2012 by Officer Salvator Serrao, of PDQ 30, the project was initially designed for members of Magreb community. Mr. Serrao wanted to build bridges, help newcomers integrate and communicate positive values to youth looking for something to do. This year, the project was extended to the schools and to anti-bullying programs. New cohorts have also been trained to receive the teachings and discipline of Sensei Gabriel Samson.
The Ville de Montréal, the Fondation Bon Départ and Pro Martial academy worked together to offer this opportunity to active teens. Today, the young participants are proudly sporting kimonos bearing a unique badge made up of SPVM and Project CONTACT colours. It is a great way for young people to create solid, lasting bonds with engaged police officers.
