Maria Giovanna Evangelista a été vue pour la dernière fois le 27 janvier 1997 à Montréal. Maria a dit à sa mère qu'elle ne voulait plus retourner à l'hôpital Louis-H Lafontaine et voudrait travailler en Californie. Elle a pris l'avion en janvier de Toronto pour San Francisco. Elle devait être de retour en février. Elle a séjourné dans un hôtel à San Francisco jusqu'au 7 février 1997. Les bagages de Maria sont demeurés dans la chambre d'hôtel.
