Motorized personal mobility devices (MPMD) have been authorized since July 20, 2023, for a period of 3 years, as part of the pilot project for the use of motorized personal transport devices initiated by the Ministère des Transports et de la Mobilité Durable.
A MPMD is a vehicle designed to carry people. This term includes electric scooters, gyroscopic vehicles and scooter-like vehicles with a seat or three wheels.
Here are the requirements for using MPMDs:
- Be at least 14 years of age,
- Wear a helmet,
- Ride at a maximum speed of 25 km/h,
- Have a maximum power of 500 W and a maximum mass of 36 kg (including battery),
- Have a brake on each wheel and a hand brake (if the device has handlebars),
- Have wheel(s) with a minimum diameter of 190 mm,
- Front and rear lights, as well as front, rear and side reflectors.
With an MPMD, it is forbidden to:
- Ride on sidewalks,
- Ride in areas where the maximum speed limit is over 50 km/h,
- Carry passengers,
- Wearing headphones,
- Use a cell phone,
- Use alcohol or drugs.
